City Council Approves Alternative G1 as Preferred Alternative - August 18, 2008

On August 18, 2008, the City of Charlottesville City Council voted to approve Alternative G1 as the Preferred Alternative for the Route 250 Bypass Interchange at McIntire Road project.  The City Council approval of Alternative G1 allows for further engineering development and coordination with VDOT and FHWA. The design concept will continue to be refined in accordance with City Council comments provided at the June 4, 2008 Worksession.  Councilors asked the project team to coordinate the Hillcrest Road access concerns by meeting with the community.  Click here to access the City Council website and the August 18, 2008 meeting minutes.

Alternatives Studied

Refined Alternatives Presented to Steering Committee:

On May 2 and 3, 2007 the Project Team presented the Refined Alternatives to the Steering Committee and Peer Review Panel. The refined Alternatives represent improvements to the Recommended Alternatives for Detailed Evaluation from July 27, 2006. The Refined Alternatives incorporate additional engineering and detailed traffic studies to address geometric and operational issues, such as ramp grades, traffic merge areas and roundabout design. The Project Team reviewed the improvements during the meeting with the Steering Committee and Peer Review Panel, and highlighted the reasons for the design refinements.

Recommended Alternatives for Detailed Evaluation:

On July 27, 2006, the Project Team presented it's draft recommendations to the Steering Committee of the Alternatives for Detailed Evaluation. The alternatives considered were presented to the public at the June 14, 2006 Citizen Informational Meeting #2. The Project Team draft recommendations included Alternatives A, B, C1, E2 and G1. Based on Steering Committee discussion with the Project Team, the Steering Committee reached a consensus decision for these alternatives to proceed into the Detail Evaluation phase of the study.

Preliminary Study of Interchange Alternatives - October 2000:

During the May 2, 2007 Peer Review Work Session, the Project Team provided background information to the Peer Review Panel. The Project Team referenced the "Starting Point" for the Route 250 Bypass Interchange at McIntire Road project as the conceptual alternatives presented in the City of Charlottesville report "Preliminary Study of Interchange Alternatives - October 2000." The October 2000 Report recommended Alternatives 3, 4, and 6 should be further evaluated with a functional design review. The Project Team began its efforts by completing functional design review of Alternatives 3, 4, and 6, and presented its findings to the Steering Committee (January 11, 2006) and to the Public (March 23, 2006).
